Nofima is a leading, independent food research institute with more than 380 employees.
Our main areas of expertise are aquaculture, the food industry, and fisheries, and we also have extensive experience with interdisciplinary projects.
Our research covers the entire food chain—from the very beginning of food production, through harvesting, processing, and packaging, to commercialisation and marketing.
We are specialists in researching safe, healthy, and tasty food, with a strong focus on developing production methods that make full use of every part of the raw materials. In this way, we aim to contribute to the development of sustainable food systems.

Extensive EU Experience
Nofima has over 25 years’ experience in managing and participating in both large and small EU projects within the field of food research.
We have a robust administrative team that supports our scientists throughout every stage of a project. For example, Nofima has dedicated staff who specialise in EU projects. These colleagues regularly update their knowledge of European Union procedures to assist with application writing, contract negotiation, financing, reporting, and other follow-up activities.
As a result, we have a solid framework in place to support all the research-related work we undertake.
In addition, our experienced communications department consistently achieves good results in promoting our research across various publishing platforms.
Horizon 2020
In the EU’s previous framework programme for research, Horizon 2020, Nofima coordinated 5 projects and was a partner in 20 projects that had a total value of 13.1 million Euros.

The vast majority of the projects we have participated in are related to Societal Challenges (82.7 percent), where we have mainly conducted research on food safety and sustainable food production. The rest of our EU projects (17.3 percent) are Excellent Science projects, where we have developed infrastructure related to research and development, and participated in the Marie Sklodowska-Curie-ITN network. Here, we have both developed talents and been a coordinator in advanced research.
Looking at all of our EU projects so far, we have collaborated with 389 different organisations, and with companies in 51 different countries. In addition to a number of different EU countries, we have collaborated with 21 countries spread across all the continents of the world.
In addition to our many and good national and international networks, we are extremely proud of our highly skilled and international staff. In 2021, we have 36 different nationalities employed at Nofima, and our working languages are both Norwegian and English.
We have been part of European research collaboration since the EU’s fifth framework programme for research and innovation, and we look forward to taking part in Horizon Europe, the EU’s ninth framework programme that will run in the period 2021-2027.

Nofima works closely with both Norwegian and international industry across many fields related to food. We have strong partnerships with European companies and possess a good understanding of the challenges facing the sector. We also collaborate effectively with the Norwegian support system for industry.
