Background

Large companies have measures and resources to detect, prevent, and protect themselves against food fraud, but for small and medium sized enterprises this is more of a challenge.

Through clear recommendations we will help small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) combat food fraud.

Goal

Our goal is to revolutionize the combat against food fraud and enhance transparency in our food chains.

This will be done by establishing and mobilizing The European Community of Practice (EFF-CoP). The EFF-CoP will function as a sustainable Research and Innovation ecosystem of food fraud made up of researchers and end-users. Our goal is to cultivate a vibrant community of over 5000 members at the end of the project, all dedicated to combating food fraud and learning from each other.

How we work

Nofima leads the work on the production of a Good Practice Recommendation for small and medium sized enterprises on how to self-assess food fraud vulnerability and publish it as a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA).

We will use the Norwegian fishing industry as an example of what SME’s can do to reduce their risk of fraud.

At Nofima we have specialized in looking into recorded data, identifying discrepancies and trying to detect food fraud that way. We do input-output analysis, where we compare numbers recorded in one place with numbers recorded in another place, and we do mass balance accounting where we look at the process and the yield to see if it makes sense.

Through these recommendations, EFF-CoP will help ensure a fair competitive landscape among businesses and increase consumer trust and confidence.
