I have over 20 years of experience in method development and applied data analysis, primarily within food science and biotechnology. My core expertise lies in Sensometrics, statistics for sensory and consumer science. This includes experimental design, multivariate analysis, and multivariate ANOVA—tools essential for extracting reliable insights from complex sensory and consumer data. I have particular competence in segmentation and cluster analysis, both within consumer science and in broader applications.
At Nofima, I contribute to maintaining and advancing the institute’s internationally recognized competence in Sensometrics. I have authored several peer-reviewed publications, the book chapter “Statistical Approaches to Consumer Segmentation” and co-authored the book “Individual Differences in Sensory and Consumer Science: Experimentation, Analysis and Interpretation” with Tormod Næs and Paula Varela, which is widely used in both academic and applied contexts.
My role includes supporting interdisciplinary teams by leading statistical analyses in sensory studies and consumer surveys and advising on process design or complex experimental designs for Nofima’s sensory panel studies. Example of these are my contributions to the EU project InnoFoodAfrica or the national project SOUP, to ensure robust and interpretable results.
Beyond sensory science, I have developed expertise in microbiome data analysis, particularly in multifactorial experimental designs that go beyond standard treatment/control comparisons. This includes hands-on experience with state-of-the-art multivariate ANOVA methods suited for high-dimensional biological data.
In early stages of my carrier I worked on statistical methodology to handle raw material variation in industrial processes, resulting in the PhD thesis on use of fuzzy clustering for sorting of raw materials. I have also worked with classification, and my work in this field was also recognized with the Kowalski Prize for Best Applied Paper in the Journal of Chemometrics (2004).
I have co-supervised PhD candidates to ensure methodological quality in their statistical work and contributed to building Nofima’s expertise in text mining approaches through the EU project COMFOCUS. My programming skills include R and MATLAB, with working knowledge of Python.
