Nofima is among the leading institutions in Norway for feed research - especially for farmed fish. To further strengthen our position in this area, we have allocated internal funds in 2024 to work across departments and geographical locations.

In the Norwegian Long-term Plan for Research and Higher Education, the government has set a goal that all feed for farmed fish and livestock shall come from sustainable sources and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in food systems.

After the long-term plan was presented, they have slightly redefined the societal mission, but the objective remains clear:

By 2034, a significantly higher proportion of feed ingredients shall come from sustainable raw materials – preferably Norwegian ones.

Four working groups

Four groups in Nofima have worked throughout the year on different themes.

  • Incentives that drive the transition to sustainable solutions. Group leader Eirik Mikkelsen
  • Cross-sector utilization of residual raw materials. Group leader Rune Rødbotten
  • The potential of microalgae. Group leader Katerina Kousoulaki
  • Fermentation technology. Group leader Marte Jensen

The objective of this strategic initiative is to strengthen Nofima’s position as a key research and competence environment for addressing the societal mission of sustainable feed. We shall highlight our advantages in understanding the entire food system and integrating sustainable feed within it.

We must think holistically and gather relevant expertise, both from natural and social sciences, from across the entire organization.
