Nofima - A leading institute for applied research within fisheries, aquaculture and food.

“The new frontiers in salmonid biology” webinar series will provide a platform to present advances and new research on salmonid biology, with the aim of guiding technological innovations in salmonid aquaculture.

This second webinar in the series is about biology in early life of the salmon. Erik Burgerhout in Nofima and Rob McFarling at the University of Exeter, UK, will present the research:

Erik Burgerhout is a researcher in the Production Biology department of the Aquaculture division at Nofima. His main interest is on understanding the molecular physiological mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity: how does the early life environment, such as temperature and oxygen influence the phenotype (e.g. growth, disease resistance) later in life, and to apply this knowledge to improve aquaculture practices.

Rob McFarling – Postdoctoral Research Assistant (Aquaculture and Aquatic Toxicology), University of Exeter, UK. He will be talking about his research into rainbow trout aquaculture and how conditions experienced during early embryo development can shape responsiveness to stress at later life stages.

The webinar will be in English, and Linda Tschirren in Nofima will guide you through these 50 minutes. After the presentations there will be a Q&A session.

About the webinar series

For 2025, the series will cover three key topics:

  1. Cardiorespiratory physiology
  2. Stress physiology
  3. Mucosal immunity

This free webinar is designed for researchers, students, academics, industry professionals, fish health personnel, and others interested intereressert i temaet. The webinar series is part of the SIS Frontiers project, a strategic initiative within the Aquaculture Division of Nofima.

We are now developing the precursor to a European communication standard. This will promote responsible and sustainable seafood consumption.

VeriFish CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) – a European Good Practice recommendation for communicating verifiable sustainability indicators for seafood

This half-day event brings together stakeholders from across the seafood value chain, consumer groups, policymakers, and researchers to explore and reflect on how we can better communicate responsible seafood choices to the public.

The VeriFish CWA lays the foundation for harmonised communication around seafood sustainability, nutrition, provenance, and biodiversity across Europe.

Be part of the process shaping how sustainability is communicated in seafood markets, retail, and policy.

The full agenda will be published shortly on the project website www.verifish.info

The event will include

  • Opening remarks and keynote presentations
  • Presentation of the VeriFish CEN Workshop Agreement
  • Stakeholder panel discussion and Q&A
  • Networking opportunities

On 19-21 August, Nofima will be at the Aqua Nor fair in Trondheim with a seminar and stand. Aqua Nor is an international meeting place for the aquaculture industry, and is today the world’s largest trade fair for aquaculture technology.

Stand

Meet us at stand E-407 at Forskningstorget. Together with FHF – Norwegian Seafood Research Fund, the Research Council of Norway and eight other research institutes, we are looking forward to meet the aquaculture industry and talk about the opportunities research can provide to solve problems and develop the industry further.

Our stand in Hall E is just to the right of the main entrance when you come from “Skansen”.
