Summary

The C-FAARER CSA project was created with the overall aim of supporting marine innovators, entrepreneurs, and other pioneers in the Atlantic and Arctic Sea basin in transitioning towards the use of community-driven sustainable business models for regenerative ocean farming. After the project was started, it was decided to focus primarily on seaweed as the farmed product. This decision was influenced by the ability to cultivate seaweed both organically and regeneratively. Furthermore, seaweed farming is becoming increasingly prominent in the countries represented in the project, namely Ireland and Norway. Until now, most work on regenerative farming has been focused on the cultivation of grains, vegetables and meat on land. With a limited prior focus on regenerative ocean farming, the European Commissions (EC) call on this topic, resulting in CFAARER and its sister project COOL BLUE. C-FAARER previously defined regenerative ocean farming as “a form of marine enterprise that gives back more than it takes out, leaving nature in a better state that benefits future generations” (Kapletia et al., 2024). Community-driven regenerative ocean farming was defined as “the business of creating a sustainable and mutually-beneficial balance between social, economic, and environmental interests, providing renewable produce and systemic benefits for societies that depend on marine and coastal life.”...
