Summary
Innomar AS has developed a new cod trap that aims to lead the cod more easily into the trap, prevent escaping, and at the same time can retain a large cod biomass. These three factors are central to succeed in a commercial trapfishery after cod, and were investigated systematically in this work. Initial experiments with the Innomar prototype trap showed that the cod were willing to go into the new trap, both under experimental conditions in the lab and during field studies. Escapes from the new cod trap however, was also observed. After reviewing lab studies and field trials we modified the catch opening in the lower chamber by inserting three calves intended to prevent fish from escaping. Our lab study showed that the modification improved catches compare to the first version of the Innomar cod trap.
