The quest for the lost kelp forest

This dissemination project aims to engage primary school children in their local environment and the ocean’s ecosystem. Through this project, students will discover that sea urchins, seaweed, and kelp are local, nutritious, and low-emission foods we should consider eating more in the future.

FermGrønt

Fermented Vegetables: The Path to Increased Demand and Innovation in Norway

In this project, we will map out opportunities and barriers for expanding and succeeding in the market for Norwegian fermented vegetables.

TorskRAS

Development of Production Protocol for Atlantic Cod in RAS

RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) has emerged as a potential system for cod juvenile production in Norway. This project aims to build competence for the cod research in RAS at Nofima.

Aquatic food systems

Aquatic food systems in the Nordic countries

In this project, we will map out the challenges and opportunities for increasing the consumption of aquatic food in the Nordic region. We will also examine the role of aquatic food systems in relation to food security, and map greenhouse gas emissions in different parts of the value chains in these food systems.

ÅRSAK

Reasons for rejection of aquaculture site applications

The project maps reasons for rejection of site applications, to what degree a lack of knowledge has mattered, and recommends themes for new research.

VaxiCod

Vaccination against francisellosis in farmed cod in light of the changing climate

Atlantic cod farming is making a comeback and needs support to improve disease resistance.

IllumiAkva

Species-specific light use in Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout aquaculture

In IllumiAkva, we gather knowledge about the use of light in aquaculture, from the earliest life stages to harvest-ready fish.

Chicken meal for salmon

Utilisation of residual raw materials from chicken as a protein source in salmon feed

The aim of this project is to facilitate increased utilisation of chicken residues in feed for salmon.

Fish2Bio

Better utilization of deceased farmed fish

In this project, we explore how enzymatic hydrolysis can be used to extract valuable resources, such as proteins and oil, from salmon that die in fish farms. We are also investigating potential applications for these resources.

BLUSH-Laks

Using pink salmon efficiently, sustainably and profitably

The goal of the project is to develop new knowledge and solutions that contribute to the efficient, sustainable and profitable utilisation of pink salmon.

Exploitation of omega-3 fatty acids from salmon oil in mice

The industry wants a shift from today's production of unrefined crude oils to pet food, towards more production of profitable salmon oils of high quality for human consumption.

BioProtect

Better tools for taking care of marine biodiversity

The BioProtect project will co-develop and demonstrate ecosystem-based solutions to accelerate the protection and restoration of biodiversity in marine and coastal areas.

VALORISH

Green VALORisation cascade approach of fISH waste and by-products

The primary goal of the VALORISH project is to optimize fish side streams into high-value products for food, nutraceuticals, and supplements. The project aims to develop and scale up a computationally assisted cascade by valorization approach for side streams and by-products from the fishing industry, transforming these resources into high-value products.

VeriFish

Towards responsible seafood consumption

Seafood is a healthy and sustainable protein source. However, navigating in the complex world of sustainability in seafood consumption is challenging for the consumer. This project aims to make it easier for the consumer to make conscious choices for a more sustainable diet.

Gene2Bread

Building knowledge and exploiting technology to achieve high wheat self-sufficiency in Norway

The project aims to increase Norway’s self-sufficiency in milling wheat by gaining knowledge to improve wheat quality and increase its utilisation. Adequate protein content and a stable quality between seasons and within a season are prerequisites to increasing the share of Norwegian wheat in the flour blend.

EpiBrood

Intergenerational epigenetic effects in Norwegian salmon aquaculture

The EpiBrood project will investigate whether different industry broodstock rearing environments and maturation practices used by breeding and multiplier companies in Norway have significant intergenerational (parent-offspring) impacts on phenotypes (e.g. growth) of production fish, whether epigenetic programming is involved and what preventions and treatments might mitigate such effects.

Methodology for assessing environmental impact from aquaculture seen in relation to other sources of impact

In MetoMilo, methods are developed to assess how various influences contribute to the environmental condition in sea areas along the coast.

ValueSøl

Producing high value macroalgae in Troms and Finnmark through advanced hatchery and production techniques

The ValueSøl project aims to improve the efficiency for dulce/søl (Palmaria palmata) sporeling production, to promote the production of dulce for human consumption with low carbon footprint and to evaluate dulce cultivation as a mitigating solution for aquaculture effluents discharged to the environment.
