Summary
Sludge from salmon farming consists of uneaten feed and faeces. Faeces are brittle particles which easily disrupts and are difficult to collect with mechanical filters. Thus, sludge commonly contains large amounts of feed. Feed and faeces have different chemical composition, and the properties of sludge therefore depends on amount of feed in the sludge. Aquaculture sludge is e.g. used as agriculture fertilizer and for biogas production. There are some challenges related to this use. There is potential for developing technology for reduced amount of feed in the sludge. Reducing the feed spill will improve the resource utilization in salmon farming.
