Summary

The results show that a cost efficient design can be used to estimate genetic correlations between feed efficiency measured in fresh water and during the grow-out period in seawater, and also between feed efficiency, growth and body composition, but must be used with caution as the method has reduced accuracy at lower true correlations. This makes it possible to commit genetic studies on traits, which are resource demanding but necessary to study. Knowing more about the genetic background of feed efficiency is necessary for deciding which to use for the selection for feed efficiency in Atlantic salmon. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
