Summary
Conventional and new process technology with possible application in the refining of crude oil from mackerel byproducts has been surveyed. There exists little literature on mackerel crude oil. Methods applied to crude oil from related pelagic species (herring, solder, sardine), have therefore been prioritized. Most of the purification methods described in the literature are laboratory studies, still at the R&D stage. In addition, most new techniques have limitations related to refining of highly unsaturated marine oils, as the main technical challenges are oxidation, isomerization and polymerization of the oil during processing, scalability and costs at industrial scale.
