Summary

The regulations states that wild cod that are captured and stored alive shall have access to feed within 4 weeks after capture. It is challenging to get fish that has grown up in the wild to accept feed in captivity. The proportion of fish that will feed depend on capture and handling, but even within groups that presumably are suitable for live storage not all will accept to feed. Today the industry use whole capelin or herring to feed wild captured cod. The availability and quality of such food fish varies during the year and between years, so the industry would benefit from a diet with predictable quality and availability, and preferably with a mechanical stability that allows automated feeding. This report summarise knowledge on dietary needs for the Atlantic cod and previous weaning trials undertaken with this type of fish.
