For 2025, the series will cover three key topics:

  1. Cardiorespiratory physiology
  2. Stress physiology
  3. Mucosal immunity

This free webinar is designed for researchers, students, academics, industry professionals, fish health personnel, and others interested in the field. The webinar series is part of the SIS Frontiers project, a strategic initiative within the Aquaculture Division of Nofima.

In the inaugural webinar of New Frontiers in Salmonid Biology, Gerrit Timmerhaus and Lucas Zena will present some recent advances in our understanding of salmonid cardiorespiratory functions.

About the presenters:

Lucas A. Zena, specializes in fish cardiovascular physiology and welfare. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of cardiac responses in fish. For instance, Zena’s studies have demonstrated that, following myocardial infarction, rainbow trout exhibit ventricular plasticity that enhances heart performance over time.

Title of presentation: Electrocardiography for Screening Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Fish

Gerrit Timmerhaus, has conducted extensive research on fish physiology, particularly focusing on how environmental factors such as exercise influence growth, immune functions and cardiac functions in Atlantic salmon.

Title of presentation: Machine Learning Assisted Salmonid Heart Morphology Assessment

The webinar will be hosted by Carlo C. Lazado and will conclude with a Q&A session moderated by Lene Sveen.
